Print Text - WestWorld

Image result for westworld poster

This print text advertises a new series called "West-world" as shown in the image above. West world is a Sci-fi western thriller series, filled with twists, mysterious and excitement.

Colour Scheme- This poster uses a mixture of silver/white with black as its colour scheme. The colours used in the background are quite dark, suggesting evil or mystery. Opposite to this, the main image is bright and shiny making it emphasised and stand out, the choice of bright colours could suggest purity and peace.

Layout- Alongside the colour scheme, the choice of layout is used effectively. The main image is the series's logo, so making it the main image could be used so that viewers could remember the logo. The masthead is reasonably small, but its choice of colour stands out from the dark background. Likewise the slogan and date stands out, but not as much as the masthead. The background behind the logo is a image of a desert, this links to the "Wild-West" genre and the name of the series.

Genre- As referenced throughout the poster, the series's genre is "Wild-West" as suggested by the title and by the background. But this genre has a twist suggested from the use of the main image, a figure inside a circle making it look futuristic and overall it suggests a genre of "Sci-fi".

Themes- Suggested by the genre, the series could have themes of: action, violence, adventure or even romance. On top of this, A theme of mystery could also be suggested by the use of the figure in the middle of the poster.

Target audience- From the use of the themes and genres suggested, the target audience for this series could be 16+. The themes and genres used in this series would be very appealing to this age group. Likewise the poster design and layout will be intriguing from the use of a mysterious choice of images.

What is a Thriller Film?

A Thriller film can make viewers feel a roller coaster of emotions such as curiosity, scared or even sad it bends the viewers emotions to its will.  Thrillers are made up of a range of key elements from themes such as; romance, crime and action to countless types of characters such as protagonists to antagonists.

Themes
Thrillers are unique with their range of themes. Most thriller films have a mixture or combination of themes to make the film interesting and engaging. A very common theme in a thriller film is Protagonist VS Antagonist this type of thriller is mainly about a hero (protagonist) defeating a villain (antagonist). To make this theme more interesting twists and mind games are used throughout the film to make it less predictable. In this theme, elements of violence and action is commonly used along side victims and crime to make the protagonist have a reason or a narrative to have a antagonist. For example a potential antagonist could commit a crime such as murder or kidnapping (Themes), the victims lover tends to be the protagonist who saves the day. This layout of a thriller tends to have the victim as a woman (damsel in distress), the protagonist and antagonist as males, this stereotype of a woman needing saving has been used in countless thriller films.

On the other hand black equals death and evil, like the antagonist this is a theme which is commonly used throughout different types of films.

Magazine comparison - Empire "Thor The Dark World" and Film "The magnificent seven"

Image result for empire thor the dark world

Magazine review- By Empire "Thor The Dark World"
Just from first glance this magazine is big and bold, it stands out from other magazines through the use of its layout and choice of colours which will appeal to the target audience. The massive image of a popular actor which stars in the movie is used as a eye catching and interesting background. This actor is well know for the younger generations from other movies which suits the target audience. The masthead of the word "THOR" strongly suggests that the image and the text are connect unlike a random advert on the front cover.

The choice of colours also suits the target audience, for example the use of the dramatic and bold colours used through out the background makes it very appealing. Also some key text is bright yellow to stand out, this colour slightly matches the fire and sparks in the background, but mainly it is used to stand out from the dark and moody background resulting in a even more eye catching front cover.

Image result for film magazine the magnificent seven
On the other hand this magazine is a lot less dramatic, it has limited colour and a very simple background. This background is plane white, but it emphasises the main image of the suspected main characters in the movie making them stand out. Also the title of the masthead of the words "The magnificent seven" is white and is overlapping the main image which suggests that they are connected unlike the range of images at the bottom of the magazine which have nothing to do with the movie. From the layout and style of this magazine it seems to be targeted at a slightly higher age range than the other magazine, also this is suggested from the use of a much more formal theme and design.

The layout is similar to the other magazine, these layouts are very effective and clearly show what the magazine includes. But unlike the first magazine this has the bar code and adverts which could result in a less appealing front cover to the target audience.

Overall both of these magazines are suitable for their target audience from the use of colour, layout and design. In my opinion the first magazine is more appealing to me unlike the second one because of the use of images and the design.

No Country for Old Men- Case Analysis

Image result for no country for old men dvd cover

No Country for Old Men- Case Analysis

Layout
This films cover is unique and eye catching because of the use two main images on the front cover, these images represent the wild west genre which is the theme of the movie. In between the two images is the title, its font is a old and rustic style which also suits the theme or the wild west. On the back cover there are multiple images; some of the scene in the movie is displayed along side each other also another image is used as a background. Important text is clearly shown no the back, this text is about the plot of the movie, above this plot is positive review on the movie to entice people into buying the film and watching it.

Themes
As shown in the images and text the films theme is the wild west, the use of colours, shades and images suit this theme resulting in a clear theme which can be appealing to the target audience. Ontop of this the movie seems to a theme of action and violence which will further increase appeal.

Target audience
This films target audience seems to be around 14+, the theme and genre is very appealing and suitable for this age group. Also the layout and style of the cover is intriguing and interesting making it stand out from other DVDs.

Genre
This film is a action backed adventure filled with violence and chase scenes as suggested in the range of images used in the front and back cover of the DVD. The bottom image of on the front cover shows a man running away with a suitcase. Also the suitcase is poring out money whilst the man is running away from a pickup truck. This single image suggests; chase scenes and action let along the other images shown through out the DVD cover.

Colours
There is a limited amount of colour displayed on the front cover these colours are limited to; orange, yellow and black with a hint of white used as the text, white is used to stand out from the dark background. On the other side of the DVD a range of colours are used in the much smaller images but with the same colour as the background. Overall these colours suit the theme of the wild west.

The Captive Trailer- A intense and mysterious thriller about a young girl who has gone missing

At the start of this trailer it sets the scene by presenting the environment, it shows a cold and snowy atmosphere alongside the sound of wind suggesting that its winter this will make the viewer feel immersed like they are there. Shortly after a scene of a father and his daughter in their car is presented, then the father is in a call with the mother showing their good relationship with each other with a hint of humour. Then the father leaves to get dinner leaving his daughter alone.

Briefly after it fades to black alongside tense and moody music, then the father realises his daughter has gone missing. Isolation trailer review

Isolation trailer review- This thriller movie has aspects of violence, action and drama.

This trailer starts of as a relaxing and peaceful holiday for a romantic couple but then turns for the worse, the music builds up to create tension then it presents that this lonely island is not all what it seems.

Short and mysterious clip show that the holiday is going down hill for the couple and unfortunate things start to happen. This trailers target audience is aimed at 14+ it suits this with the use of short and continuous clips which gradually build up making it more interesting and engaging for the viewer. Questions develop about the other people on the island with no answers, along side this intense music is played suggesting something bad is going to happen.

Overall this thriller trailer is quite intense and intriguing for its target audience with the use of interesting and mysterious but short clips which shows unanswered questions, action, violence, and sexual scenes between the two suggested main characters. These characters are shown to be the protagonists trying to get out alive away from the island, but in the trailer the antagonist is not clearly presented but is hinted to be one of the couples of even all of them through the use of violence.

The girl on the train trailer review

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN- A thriller about a missing person in a modern day city

This thriller film trailer is intense and intriguing, its target audience is 14+ has a range of camera angles and lighting through out the trailer, it uses mysterious music which the clips are in sequence to at the beginning of the trailer to build tension. In the trailer it also shows a girl is gone missing which matches the genre of thrillers, suggesting that though out the actually movie it is going to be based on this missing person. This suits the target audience because it makes them intrigued and interested. The trailer seems to be based in modern time in a city which also suits the thriller genre.

At the start of the trailer a close shot of a woman's face is firstly presented and says a interesting sentence which will make the viewer curious, briefly after it cuts to a new scene along with peaceful music then the woman narrates over a series of short scenes which she is in. Then suddenly the music's tune flips upside down into tense music and a man appears very close to the woman in a sexual way and the narration suggests that this man is a secret which she is trying to hide. The use of the music and the camera angle shows that something bad is going to happen. This creates tension and curiosity for the viewer making them wanting to watch more.

A woman goes missing which suits the genre of a thriller also in the trailer the protagonist is suggested to be a witness who saw the woman briefly before she disappeared, and a string of clues follow this witness connecting her to the missing woman which also suggest that she is the antagonist but isn't completely clear.

From the look of this trailer its target audience is around 8+, it  suits with target audience with the use of continuous short funny clips which would be quite interesting and engaging to that age. Likewise the genre of comedy and the theme of cute and funny animals will be very entertaining for a younger audience. Advert targeted at males

This advert about Pepsi Max is targeted at men, it accomplishes this with the 3 main codes-

Audio codes- This advert has dialog, sound effects and music across the advert. At the start there is background sounds of people talking to represent a busy bar and then the 2 main characters interact with the use of simple single sentences, this makes the advert easy to understand what is happening but at the same time it does not even advertise the actual brand. After the TV news finishes a range of sound effects such as broken glass and screaming is used to make it look more realistic. At the end advert it actually shows its brand then the music builds up and gets louder to symbolise that the drink Pepsi Max can give you confidence and improve your life also suggest that the drink can make you pull off anything, the advert shows this in a comedy way to appeal to male viewers.

Visual codes- The advert uses dark and bland colours in the background with some random people to fill up the space to look like a real life bar, also to make the 2 main characters stand out from the background. The brand is presented very casually in the woman's hand on the bar table to hint what the advert is actually about. Also there is a range of props such as chairs and tables in the background, also the Pepsi can and other glasses are props. The main characters also background character are wearing casual clothes which are quite dull and bland so that they don't stand out, also the woman is wearing some make-up to look attractive to entice males into watching the advert.

Technical codes- Through out the advert the camera angle used are; eye level, over the shoulder, close ups, high angle and medium shots. In most shots the 2 main characters are in them but other background characters are used to set the scene and present the environment of the pub. At the over the shoulder angle the TV was the main attraction of the shot to make it feel like you where there. Each shot was quite short to make the advert fast past making it interesting to watch so the viewer doesn't get distracted. At the end the product is briefly shown and shortly after the companies name, to make it funny and at the same time make it not feel like a ad.

This advert targets females from all sizes to wear their new autumn collection clothes, they accomplish this with the use of the 3 main codes-

Audio codes- Through out the entire advert the same song is played, this song is energetic and fast paced this suggests that the new collection is limited time only. On the other hand this song was used to inspire all types of woman who are not confident about the way they look to buy their clothes, so they can expand their target market from small sizes to large. Other than the song their is no dialog or even sound effects used in the advert.

Visual codes- All of the characters in the advert are wearing make-up and stylish clothes to make them look more appealing or attractive to entice the viewer that if they buy their clothes they can look as good as them. There is a range of lighting from a bright sunny day to a dark and rainy day, but no matter the weather the characters seem to be happy and energetic to make the viewer think that wearing their clothes will make them feel uplifted and joyful in any situation.
